Invited Scholar of the Academy of Sciences of IR Iran Appointed to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification
Dr. Tayyebe Mesbahzadeh, invited scholar of the Academy of Sciences and an associate professor of Reclamation of Arid and Mountainous Regions, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Tehran, has become the first Iranian to join the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
Dr. Tayyebe Mesbahzadeh, invited scholar of the Academy of Sciences and an associate professor of Reclamation of Arid and Mountainous Regions, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Tehran, has become the first Iranian to join the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

 

Dr. Mesbahzadeh, has been appointed as a member of the UNCCD’s Science-Policy Interface for a three-year term.

 

The Science-Policy Interface of the UNCCD was established in 2013 by the Conference of the Parties to the Convention. Its purpose is to bridge the gap between the scientific community and policymakers, providing scientific recommendations to guide the assembly’s decisions regarding desertification, drought, and land degradation. The council consists of 25 members and observers. Ten of these members are independent scientists selected through an open call, ensuring geographical representation by the Bureau of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST).

 

The remaining 15 members include five independent scientists nominated by regional groups, five members of the CST Bureau as policymakers, and five representatives from specialized international organizations as observers.

 

Regarding the role of the Science-Policy Interface, Dr. Mesbahzadeh states: “This council clarifies scientific policies for decision-makers and politicians, providing them with a scientific framework to implement the best preventive measures and determine optimal solutions for future challenges related to desertification, climate change, drought, and dust storms.”
