Professor Ali A. Moosavi- Movahedi, Chairman of the Department of Basic Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran, stated in his note on the occasion of World Chemistry Week: A journey from ancient mysteries to the frontiers of modern knowledge, from the fires of alchemists’ furnaces to the brilliance of advanced laboratory equipment, chemistry is the story of human curiosity, the discovery of the unknown, and the transformation of the world. It is a story that began centuries ago and continues today at an ever-accelerating pace. Driven by a passion for uncovering the secrets of nature, alchemists embarked on a path that would eventually lead to the emergence of modern chemistry. Iranian Scientists such as Jabir ibn Hayyan and Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi made valuable contributions to this journey by advancing experimentation and laboratory methods. Over time, observation and experience gave way to precise experiments, scientific laws, and a deeper understanding of the structure of matter. Chemistry became one of the fundamental pillars of scientific and technological progress. Chemistry Is the Science of Life, the Language of Matter, the Key to the Future. From medicines that save human lives to materials that make cutting-edge technologies possible, from clean water and sustainable energy to smart agriculture and environmental protection, chemistry leaves its mark on every aspect of our lives. On the occasion of World Chemistry Day on October 23 and Iran’s Chemistry Week (October 19–25), and as part of the ongoing specialized meetings organized by the Commission on the History of Science of the Academy of Sciences, I.R. Iran, a session on the history of chemistry entitled “From Alchemy to Chemistry” was held on October 18, 2026 at Avicenna Hall of the Academy of Sciences. The event was organized in collaboration with the Chemistry Division of the Basic Sciences Department and attended by experts and other interested participants. The session aimed to highlight the significance of chemistry in understanding the world, advancing technology, and improving human quality of life. The presentations explored the evolution of chemistry in Iran and around the world, with particular attention to the scientific heritage and contributions of Iranian scholars to this field.
