Every scientific discovery in the depths of the unknown can herald the dawn of a future civilization. Basic sciences constitute the foundation of humanity’s understanding of the world. They are disciplines that, before thinking about “building,” seek to “understand.” From their fundamental questions emerge the knowledge, innovations, and technologies of the future. Physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, the Earth and atmospheric sciences, astronomy, and other related fields are shared languages for understanding nature and the foundations of sustainable development, innovation, scientific independence, and scientific leadership among nations. In this context, the integration of the basic sciences and their convergence with interdisciplinary fields represent a major and essential step toward a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the complex phenomena of nature and toward opening new horizons in science, biocompatible technology. September 4 each year provides an opportunity to honor Abu Rayhan Biruni, the renowned Iranian scientist who, through meticulous observation, precise measurement, rational thinking, and an inquisitive spirit, transcended the boundaries of knowledge of his time. His scientific legacy reminds us that science is a free and open pursuit of truth, a pursuit that begins with questions and leads to knowledge and understanding through careful observation, precise measurement, rational analysis, and the wisdom of thoughtful inquiry. On this occasion, the Al-Biruni Award of the Academy of Sciences of Iran is presented annually to young researchers who have made outstanding and internationally recognized contributions to the basic sciences. This award serves as a valuable initiative to promote public awareness of the importance and role of the basic sciences and to encourage and support the next generation of young scientists. This year, the 12th Abu Rayhan Biruni Award Ceremony will be held, providing an opportunity to recognize the outstanding scientific contributions of young researchers and to reaffirm the vital role of the basic sciences in advancing knowledge, fostering scientific progress, and promoting sustainable development. Today, in the age of artificial intelligence, biotechnology, quantum sciences, and convergent science and technologies, we need strong basic and fundamental sciences more than ever. The future will belong to societies that create broad opportunities and sustained support for grand questions, fundamental research, distinguished scientists, and young talents. Investment in the basic sciences is not an expense for today; it is an investment in the future of Iran’s civilization and its position in the global scientific community. Along this path, we must transform schools and universities into centers of questioning and scientific creation, laboratories into wellsprings of discovery, and precision instruments into the eyes through which scientists can see into the depths of the invisible; and we must strengthen the Academy of Sciences as a watchtower and intellectual forum for the scientific future of the country. Iran is a land that has stood among the pioneers of the basic sciences throughout the history of human civilization. Reviving Iran’s scientific civilization does not mean returning to the past; rather, it means connecting Iran’s rich scientific heritage with the frontiers of advanced science and technology today and in the future. Let us, on this day, go beyond the boundaries of what we know; let us see the invisible, explore the unknown, and transform today’s unanswered questions into tomorrow’s knowledge into the scientific civilization of Iran’s future.
