Dr. Ali A. Moosavi-Movahedi, Professor at the University of Tehran and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran, delivered a lecture entitled “The Authority of Basic Sciences and Science Diplomacy” at a specialized session of the Health and International Cooperation Group of Academy of Medical Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In his presentation, he emphasized the indispensable role of basic sciences in driving medical innovation and achieving global scientific authority. Describing basic sciences as the cornerstone of advanced sciences and emerging technologies, Professor Moosavi-Movahedi stated that progress in modern medicine and the development of health technologies are impossible without sustained investment in fundamental research and the strengthening of basic sciences. He noted that scientific authority is achieved when nations assume leadership in generating credible knowledge, cultivating highly skilled human capital, addressing major societal challenges, and actively engaging in international scientific networks. Discussing emerging trends in medicine, he explained that the future of healthcare is increasingly founded on the convergence of basic sciences, engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary approaches. He stressed that the transition toward precision, predictive, preventive, and digital medicine can only be realized through strengthening convergent sciences rooted in basic sciences and expanding interdisciplinary research and innovation. He also described science diplomacy as one of the most powerful instruments for enhancing scientific authority on a global scale. He emphasized that expanding national and international collaborations, implementing joint research initiatives, attracting outstanding talent, and gaining access to advanced scientific infrastructures are essential for increasing the credibility, influence, and global impact of nations. In another part of his remarks, he highlighted the prominent role of biophysics in advancing modern medicine and diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. He further noted that a substantial proportion of Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Physics, whose discoveries have been translated into medicine and clinical sciences, originate from fundamental research in the basic sciences with strong biophysical foundations and orientations. In conclusion, he emphasized Iran’s rich scientific civilization and its substantial potential to contribute to global scientific advancement. He expressed hope that, through the convergence of basic sciences, medicine, and other scientific disciplines, together with strengthened science diplomacy and expanded international cooperation, Iran can once again play a leading role at the frontiers of knowledge and innovation and attain global scientific authority. He further emphasized the importance of close cooperation and synergy between Iran Academy of Sciences and Iran Academy of Medical Sciences, expressing confidence that such constructive interactions can pave the way for major scientific and technological advances and contribute significantly to global knowledge and innovation.
