The Coordination Committee meeting for the establishment of the Council of the Academies of Sciences of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member states was held with the presence of Prof. Mohammad Reza Shams Ardekani, secretary of the Academy of Sciences of IR Iran; Prof. Ali Akbar Moosavi- Movahedi, chairman of the Department of Basic Sciences of the Academy; Prof. Seyed Komail Tayebi, President of the ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF); and a number of officials and experts in the International Relations Office of the Academy. During this meeting, the attendees reviewed the establishment process of the ECO Council of the Academies of Sciences and exchanged views on executive mechanisms, the structure of the secretariat, cooperation with the academies of sciences of member states, and planning for the first joint meeting of this Council. The members of this Committee, emphasizing the role of the Academy of Sciences of IR Iran in developing regional scientific diplomacy, underscored the necessity of creating a formal and sustainable structure for cooperation among the academies of sciences of the ECO member states. It is noteworthy that during this meeting, it was proposed that the secretariat of the Council be established within the Academy of Sciences of IR Iran, and initial communications with member states be pursued through designated representatives. Subsequently, the capacities of the ECOSF were elaborated upon to facilitate scientific, technological, and innovative cooperation among member states, and its readiness to support the establishment process of the Council and organize joint meetings was emphasized. Based on the minutes of the meeting, the concept note prepared on the establishment of the ECO Council of the Academies of Sciences will be sent to the Turkish Academy of Sciences to provide their perspectives within one month. It was also decided that this document, after receiving the views of the academies of sciences of Pakistan and Turkey, will be reviewed, approved, and finalized at the next meeting of the ECOSF’s Board of Trustees. The Committee members also approved the planning for the first virtual meeting of the Council, to be hosted by the Academy of Sciences of IR Iran with the participation of the academies of sciences of Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey. In this regard, “Quantum Sciences and Technologies” was proposed as the theme for the first trilateral meeting. The objective of holding this meeting was stated as reaching a consensus for designing and organizing joint scientific programs, including specialized workshops and future scientific events among the three academies. At the end of this meeting, it was decided that should the participating parties agree on holding an in-person meeting, consultations and decisions would also be made regarding the host country.
